What is presbyopia?

Everybody +40 is afflicted sooner or later by presbyopia. Presbyopia is not a disease that is triggered by special circumstances but a natural process that comes about as we grow old. Presbyopia is a very common, age-related eye condition that affects the flexibility of the natural lens.

But what exactly happens to the aging Eye?

Because of their elasticity, the lenses in our eyes can change the refractive power of light by contracting or expanding. This process is called accommodation and is necessary to see things sharply at different distances. This is the only reason why we can, for example, focus from the speedometer in our car to the next street sign – and see both sharply. Accommodation is not even perceptible to us, because our eyes change focus in a fraction of a second.

Due to age, the lenses of the eye lose elasticity, which means that focusing becomes more difficult as the years go by. This is why many people from about 45 years of age onwards find it increasingly difficult to see objects that are close – they become blurred. Numbers and letters become blurred and reading becomes increasingly difficult.

Involuntarily, you start holding the newspaper or book further away. This works quite well at first, but the arms are not infinitely long. At some point, even they can’t help any more. While there is no cure for presbyopia, laser and lens surgery can help to restore the natural function of the eye.

Treat Presbyopia with Presbyond Laser blended Vision

What is PRESBYOND laser eye surgery?

With the Presbyond Laser Blended Vision method, both eyes are separately optimised for distance and near vision. Of particular importance is the so-called “Blend Zone”, the intermediate area for the middle range of vision. With the help of detailed measurements, this zone is individually determined and optimised for you, so that you can see all details sharply in the near and far range as well as in the middle range after the treatment.

The depth of field is adjusted individually for each eye and the overlap of the images in the middle area is calculated very precisely for the patient. This unique “blend zone” makes it easier for the brain to merge the images from both eyes. This creates the familiar three-dimensional image – and most patients experience an immediate improvement in their vision. In addition, they usually get used to their new vision more quickly than with other surgical correction methods.

Presbyond Blend Zone The "Blend Zone", which is individually calculated for you, ensures that you can see sharply in all areas.

The majority of patients tolerate the procedure very well: up to 97%* (compared to only 59-67%** with monovision). Another and crucial advantage of Laser Blended Vision is that contrast sensitivity (night vision) and three-dimensional vision are fully preserved in almost all cases.

Is PRESBYOND laser blended vision the right method for me?

Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is very suitable for people with an active lifestyle who find glasses, varifocals and reading glasses or even contact lenses impractical and who want to see everything sharply without any aids. Another great advantage is that this method also eliminates previously existing visual defects such as short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) or astigmatism. In a personal consultation, we will determine together with you whether this method is the most suitable for you. The type and degree of your refractive error(s), the curvature and thickness of the cornea, as well as many other factors also play an important role. In addition, your tolerance for monovision and eye dominance will be tested.

PRESBYOND laser blended vision at a glance

  • Presbyond Laser Blended Vision is a unique laser eye correction method for age-related presbyopia (presbyopia).
  • It is based on the proven modern Femto-LASIK treatment
  • It enables true binocular vision (all areas, three-dimensional) through a unique “Blend Zone”.
  • Generally clear and sharp vision in all distance ranges becomes possible: near, distance and even mid-range vision
  • Personalised approach – patient-specific ablation profile through detailed measurements and calculations

Step 1: Create a flap

A flap, a prepared layer of cornea, is created with a fast and highly precise femtosecond laser.

Step 2: Lifting the flap

The flap is gently lifted, exposing the inner corneal tissue for treatment.

Step 3: Correction of the visual defect

An excimer laser corrects the cornea, optimising the dominant eye for distance vision and the non-dominant eye for near vision.

Step 4: Folding back the flap

The flap is then folded back to its original position, where it serves as a kind of natural bandage.

1. Non-binding, personal consultation

  • Non-binding, personal consultation with your doctor
  • Assess general suitability of your eyes for the treatment
  • Measure all relevant eye parameters

2. Comprehensive preliminary Examination

  • Before the operation, a comprehensive medical examination will be conducted
  • Detailed treatment explanation by a medical specialist
  • Duration of examination usually 2 hours
  • Before this appointment you are not allowed to wear soft contact lenses for one week and hard contact lenses for two weeks

3. The Presbyond Surgery

  • Please bring someone to accompany you
  • We recommend that you wear comfortable clothing
  • Avoid using cosmetic products (face creams, lotions, make-up, perfume)
  • You can eat and drink regularly on the day of treatment, please do not smoke
  • Outpatient procedure, takes about 20 minutes for both eyes
  • No eye bandage is needed, but sunglasses are recommended
  • No driving is allowed immediately after the procedure

4. After the Presbyond Treatment

  • Please do not rub your eyes
  • Apply eye drops several times a day as directed by a doctor
  • Use artificial tears as needed
  • Professional activity after 2-4 days
  • Resume sports: after about 1 month
  • Post-operation Follow-up: after 1 day – 1 week – 1 month
  • Driving a car is allowed again only after permission of the doctor

Treating Presbyopia with Multifocal & Trifocal Lens Surgery

Multifocal and trifocal lens surgery involves implanting artificial lenses in the eye, which are able to correctly change the refractive power of light in order to see things close up and at a distance. Because the lens is artificial, it doesn’t lose its properties over time like a natural lens, and so your vision remains constant and will no longer change as you age.

At Euroeyes Hong Kong, we only use premium lenses. This means that the glare is kept to minimal levels and you’ll be able to see better in reduced light conditions, such as at night.

The procedure is relatively straight forward and takes around 15 minutes per eye to complete.
